From the beginning, The Real Housewives of New Jersey has always been a show about family. Many cast members took the risk of starring on reality TV with their siblings. Some relationships have been unaffected by Bravo fame, while others were torn apart by bottled-up issues that came to light onscreen.
While RHONJ may be the first franchise to experiment with casting siblings on the show, it's not the only Real Housewives show that has done so. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills followed the Garden State installment's lead when child stars Kim and Kyle Richards signed on for RHOBH season 1. The sometimes bizarre Kim was a main RHOBH housewife through season 4, and occasionally popped up in later seasons. Kyle and Kim's older sister Kathy Hilton came on RHOBH as a «friend of» for season 11, and will return in the same role for season 12.

Being on a reality show fractured the Richards sisters' relationship, and the same thing happened with the RHONJ's Gorgas, Giudices, and Manzos. When Teresa Giudice's brother Joe Gorga and his wife Melissa joined season 3, their ongoing family feud became the main storyline for years. The fans were used to seeing arguments with relatives on the New Jersey franchise. In season 1, viewers saw the tension between Caroline Manzo, Dina Manzo and their sister-in-law (and former RHONJ housewife), Jacqueline Laurita. The Manzos were upset that Jacqueline didn't stick up for them. Any housewife who chooses to take her friend's side over a sibling's causes huge rifts within her family.
