In setting expectations for Until Dawn fans, a Supermassive Games developer described The Quarry as having a lighter tone. The crew at Supermassive formally announced The Quarry yesterday, confirming a star-studded cast of genre veterans such as David Arquette, Lin Shaye, and Lance Henriksen. Instead of being set in The Dark Pictures Anthology, this new horror adventure will offer a standalone experience that seems to serve as somewhat of a spiritual successor to Until Dawn.
Like several Supermassive titles before it, The Quarry comes in the form of a choice-based, story-driven game wherein players assume the role of multiple characters — nine in total, this time around. Teen horror rests at the heart of the endeavor, its summer camp setting inviting users to join over half a dozen camp counselors as they enjoy one last night before heading back home. As the teaser and trailer for The Quarry show, however, the chaos of this particular slasher won't allow the group to revel in the highs of their final night for very long.

Speaking with IGN, Director Will Byles noted The Quarry will follow more traditional horror tropes compared to the ongoing Dark Pictures Anthology. It should have plenty in common with Until Dawn, in fact, though Byles set expectations by teasing The Quarry's "lighter" tone. He told the publication, "It's got a lot of that weird self-referential thing like Scream, where we all know the rules and the rules are 'don’t open the door', or 'when there’s a trap door with a noise behind it, leave it alone.'"
While this isn't the sequel Until Dawn faithful have long awaited, The Quarry certainly seems as though it will scratch the same
