The Office co-creator Greg Daniels has commented on the reported reboot of the popular American workplace comedy, saying NBC is excited about doing it and that it could be like the Star Wars TV show The Mandalorian in some ways.
Speaking to Collider, Daniels said NBC «certainly would be very excited to do it.» What's holding it back for now, however, is Daniels' busy schedule. He is currently working on Space Force for Netflix and Upload for Amazon. Not only that, but Daniels said The Office was such a «wonderful and rare experience» that he would only want to return to it if the idea was special and worthwhile enough.
«Obviously you don't want to just go back to it and kind of possibly disappoint people when right now, they couldn't be happier about it,» Daniels said.
As for what a new version of The Office could look like, Daniels said he doesn't see it featuring the same characters again. Instead, a new Office could be similar to The Mandalorian in that it extends the series into a new direction.
«I can't tell whether fans would want more of it, and when I say more of it, I don't think it would be the same characters. I think it would just be sort of like an extension of the universe, you know what I mean, like the way [The] Mandalorian is like an extension of Star Wars,» Daniels said. «But I don't know if that would be something people would want or not; it's hard to tell.»
Steve Carrell, who played Michael Scott on The Office, said in an interview that he thinks it's a bad idea to bring back The Office. Not only should the show not come back, but it also might not work if it has a similar tone and characters, he said.
