McDonald's is bringing back its vinegary Szechuan Sauce--willed back into surging popularity thanks to a Rick & Morty mention--on March 31. According to the fast-food corporation, the product will be available for «just a few days» exclusively on the McDonald's app--«while supplies last.»
«It's only returned three other times in the past 24 years, and we're excited for fans to get another taste of the elusive favorite,» reads the release. «This time around, they can get Szechuan Sauce exclusively on the McDonald's App for free when selecting as a dipping sauce option for our delicious Chicken McNuggets--the perfect pairing--or they can also purchase up to five sauces a la carte.»
Just as Rick remembered and stated in a 2017 episode that caused interest to suddenly surge, the sauce originally debuted in 1998 as part of a McDonald's promotion for the Disney animated film Mulan. Interest spiked after the Rick & Morty episode to an absurd level, including one customer who paid $15,000 on eBay for a sauce packet from 1998. An online petition advocating for the sauce's return garnered nearly 24,000 signatures.
This time, the sauces will be served in five limited-edition, golden foil packets that together spell «Szechuan.» The sauce is described by McDonald's as having a «savory and slightly sweet taste profile with hints of soy, garlic, ginger, and mild vinegar.»
