We've long heard rumours that a PS5 remake of The Last of Us was coming, but now a leak from PlayStation Direct has confirmed it. The game looks to have been made in The Last of Us Part 2's engine and is "rebuilt from the ground up for PlayStation 5." It's launching September 2, 2022. Oh, and it's been renamed The Last of Us Part 1.
Spotted by a ResetEra user, a post made on PlayStation Direct that appears to have since been deleted reads, "Buy The Last of Us Part 1 and experience the emotional storytelling and unforgettable characters of Joel and Ellie."

The trailer shows many scenes from the first game, remade in stunningly high quality. It also features a voiceover using lines from Joel, Tommy, and Ellie. It's strange seeing Ellie so young again.
It seems this remake will also contain the Left Behind DLC, which features Ellie's budding childhood romance with her friend Riley. It shows that Naughty Dog is committed to reinforcing Ellie's lesbian identity, something it did beautifully with The Last of Us Part 2.
The leak also contains a picture of the PS5 box art for the game. Ellie hangs her head melancholically, her hair in a ponytail and a bright sunset behind her, as Joel is shown with his pistol drawn, much smaller and imposed within her frame, on her shoulder. The Last of Us games are Ellie's story, and this box art proves it.
While some people debate whether or not we even need another version of The Last of Us, especially considering the remastered version is already available for free on the PS5, it's hard to deny the benefits of having Part 2's gameplay in the predecessor.
