For years now, the Epic Games Store has given away free mystery games to coincide with its big sales with the hope of drawing in new users to the PC gaming platform. The Epic Mega Sale is the latest Epic Games Store promotion, and it's live until June 16, with three free mystery games have been given away to users so far.
The first Epic Games Store free game was available for users to claim from May 19 until May 26 in the form of Gearbox Software looter-shooter Borderlands 3. Borderlands 3 set the bar high for the Epic Games Store free mystery games as it is a relatively new title compared to many of the other games that are given away for free on the service, and not only that, but it's a big budget, high profile release as opposed to an indie title.
Epic Games Store Working on Library Customization
The Epic Games Store followed up Borderlands 3 with BioShock: The Collection (which was available from May 26 to June 2), leading many users to come to a conclusion about the latest free mystery game promotion. Both Borderlands 3 and BioShock: The Collection are published by 2K Games, leading fans to assume that the rest of the Epic Games Store free mystery games would also be titles from 2K's library. However, the latest Epic Games Store free game has thrown a wrench in that theory.
The current Epic Games Store free game, free for users to claim until Thursday, June 9 at 10:00am CT, is Wolfenstein: The New Colossus. Unlike Borderlands 3 and BioShock: The Collection, Wolfenstein: The New Colossus was published by Bethesda. Needless to say, this disproves the Epic Games Store free games theory that suggested the free games would all be titles published by 2K.
