Audiences have given The Batman a top grade on CinemaScore and it's higher than both DCEU movie appearances of Batman. Originally conceived as an entry in the DCEU, The Batman was supposed to star Ben Affleck as the caped crusader and would have featured him going up against the villainous Deathstroke. The film fell apart due to a number of behind-the-scenes issues and Matt Reeves stepped into the director's chair crafting an entirely new vision for Batman in its own universe with Robert Pattinson stepping into the role of hero.
After the poor audiences and critical reaction to the depiction of Batman in the DCEU, a lot was riding on The Batman. The release of the film is a big deal for Warner Bros., as it is both their full return to theatrical exclusivity after their controversial decision to release their 2021 slate in theaters and HBO Max on the same day, as well as relaunch their Batman franchise which hasn't had a solo film since 2012's The Dark Knight Rises. So far it seems to be going well as the movie topped the opening weekend box office of Batman Begins in one day, earning $57 million on Friday. The Batman is also projected for a $120 million opening weekend, making it the best opening of 2022 and the best opening weekend since theaters shut down due to COVID-19 in 2020 behind only Spider-Man: No Way Home.
