Creators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have confirmed that several cast members from season 1 will return for The Afterparty season 2 of the Apple TV+ comedy series. The murder mystery released in January 2022 to rave reviews for its performances and unique take on the whodunit format, which embraces different genres in every episode. Originally developed by Lord and Miller as a feature film, The Afterparty was later converted into a television series; it was renewed for a second season on March 2.
The Afterparty centers on a group of former classmates who attend their high school reunion to revisit old memories, confront long-simmering problems, and rekindle past loves. But when everyone moves to an afterparty at pop star Xavier's (Dave Franco) mansion, the host is found dead at the base of a cliff, and the lead detective on the scene, Tiffany Haddish's Danner, suspects foul play. Each episode of The Afterparty is written and shot to fit into a different genre of film. One episode focusing on Ike Barinholtz's character Brett, a recently separated husband and loving father, is framed as a Fast and Furious-style action movie, complete with a car chase, fist fights, and one-liners. Another episode, centered on the aspirational Yasper (Ben Schwartz), is filmed as an upbeat musical with multiple song and dance numbers.
