A reader lists his favourite indie titles of recent years and explains why he often finds them more entertaining than traditional AAA games.
Over the last couple of console generations, I’ve increasingly turned to indie titles for something new and more interesting than the majority of AAA titles offer these days. In fact, I’ve written a number of Reader’s Features over the years for Metro on this very subject and so, inspired by this week’s Hot Topic, here are my favourite indie games of the last two console generations.
Honourable mention: Disco ElysiumI’m actually still playing Disco Elysium as I write this feature but loving it so far and had to include it somewhere. I mean, the amnesiac cop is hardly an original premise, but the writing and freedom to develop your own character is just outstanding and I’ve no doubt this’ll be pretty high up my list once I finish it.
10. Papers, PleaseYou wouldn’t think it possible to make an interesting video game from completing the repetitive and mundane tasks of working on a border patrol desk, but that’s exactly what the creators of Papers, Please have managed to do!
Split into days, the game starts with a set of simple rules that help you decide whether or not to allow access into the game’s fictional country. Money is awarded for every person that is correctly let through and fines given for any errors. As the game progresses more complications, such as having to check passports or watch out for certain types of people, are introduced.
Pretty soon things become rather difficult, and you’ll see the game over screen a number of times when you fail to earn enough to keep yourself and your family alive. In fact, I’d be surprised if many people were ever able to see it all the way
