The next Tetris 99 event will give players the chance to unlock stage themes from previous events that were only available for a limited amount of time. Tetris 99 is available as a Nintendo Switch Online exclusive, which means that all of its events have been tied to prominent Nintendo games.
The Tetris 99 events are known as Maximus Cups and they give players the chance to unlock specific stage themes, which change the background, soundtrack, and even the appearance of the blocks when used. In order to permanently unlock these stage themes, the player must earn 100 points in Maximus Cup matches against other players. The Maximus Cup events usually exist to promote a new game for the Nintendo Switch, such as the Pokémon Legends: Arceus Tetris 99 event back in January.

According to the official Nintendo website, these events only require the player to earn 10 points during the event, rather than 100, in order to earn the theme, which drastically cuts the amount of time the player needs to spend engaging with the event to unlock the themes.
