UK publishing label Team17 has decided to not pursue its plans for non-fungible tokens.
Announced on Monday of this week (January 31st), the MetaWorms NFT project was going to be a series of computer-generated art based on the Worms IP made with the support of the Reality Gaming Group.
Like almost any NFT move within the games industry, it swiftly drew criticism – both internal and external – leading the company to halt the move.
"Team17 is today announcing an end to the MetaWorms NFT project," the firm wrote on Twitter.
"We have listened to our teamsters, development partners, and our games' communities, and the concerns they've expressed, and have therefore taken the decision to step back from the NFT space."

Team17 is far from alone in pursuing NFTs as a business; Ubisoft has introduced them into Ghost Recon: Breakpoint and has since said that gamers "don't get" what the business model can do for them. Similarly, Square Enix has said that it wants to explore NFTs and blockchain games.
The developer of Stalker 2 also revealed plans to bring NFTs the title, but swiftly walked back on these plans.
