Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has shared an update on the progress of Taika Waititi's upcoming Star Wars movie. Waititi is a New Zealand filmmaker who is best known for his idiosyncratic sense of humor, which he polished in movies like the Sam Neill adventure film Hunt for the Wilderpeople and the vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, which has since been adapted into an FX series. He first stepped into big-budget Hollywood filmmaking by directing the Marvel Cinematic Universe entry Thor: Ragnarok, which came to theaters in 2017 and became the seventh highest-grossing film of the year. He will be following that success with the fourth Thorfilm, Thor: Love and Thunder, which is coming to theaters on July 8, 2022.
Along with his continued involvement in the Marvel Studios branch of Disney, Waititi has also been slowly carving out more space in the Star Wars universe. In addition to directing episode 8 of the Disney+ live-action series The Mandalorian, he starred in the project as IG-11, a bounty hunter droid who is defeated by Din Djarin and eventually reprogrammed. The character appears in a total of 3 episodes. His involvement in the franchise was solidified in May 2020 when it was announced that he would be directing a currently untitled Star Wars film.
