Nightdive Studios' remake is coming to consoles. After a successful 2016 Kickstarter that raised over $1.3 million, the title was released on PC in March last year. Despite having a long and troubled development cycle and being delayed several times, the remake was extremely well-received by fans and critics alike, with most praising it for staying true to the beloved 1994 game while bringing it up to modern standards.
The remake is an adaptation of LookingGlass Technologies' then-groundbreaking original sci-fi horror shooter, which itself served as an inspiration for spiritual successor and many more titles in terms of its development and design. Nightdive's remake combines the classic title's gameplay with all-new visuals, lighting effects, sounds, and music to breathe new life into the game's dark, atmospheric art style. The remake also features updated controls, an overhauled interface, and detailed 3D character models, replacing the original's 2D sprites.
While the remake has been available on PC for just over a year now, launching on March 3, 2023, it will be coming to consoles on May 21, 2024, with Nightdive previously confirming it was working on bringing the game to PlayStation and Xbox. As per the official announcement trailer on Nightdive Studio's YouTube channel, title will also be a cross-generational release, coming to both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X devices on this date.
There is no word on whether the remake will eventually come to Nintendo Switch devices. With the remake coming to last-gen consoles and running pretty smoothly on the — albeit more powerful — Steam Deck handheld, this possibility can't be ruled out entirely once Nightdive has launched the title on other consoles.
