A shining beacon of hope in the comic industry, the character of Superman has had a long and storied history as DC Comics’ premiere hero, but his very first words were those of a complete jerk! Superman has gone through his fair share of changes since his inception, but him not mincing words in his first appearance is as hilarious as it is mean-spirited.
As seen in the very first issue of 1939’s Action Comics, by Jerome Siegel and Joe Shuster, this comic successfully ushered in one of pop culture’s most recognizable creations in the form of the Man of Steel himself, Superman. A small part of a longer anthology-driven book (before Action Comics became synonymous with all things Big Blue, that is), this first story loosely laid the groundwork for the character while giving fans a taste of what his exploits and adventures would eventually be about.

After a quick introductory explainer of who Superman is and the immense strength, speed, and durability he is capable of displaying, the next page pivots to a story about Superman already in his element. Seen leaping (flying wasn’t in his repertoire just yet) into action with a bound and tied woman in his arms, it’s not until his next — and very first — words that it’s made clear how far this heroic character needed to go in terms of his people skills.
Placing the woman on the ground, Supes tells her, “Make yourself comfortable! I haven't time to attend to it!” immediately coming across as a total jerk by basically telling the woman to “deal with it” in regards to her bound-up predicament.
