While Superman’s tragic loss by the hands of Doomsday is one of the most iconic battles in the history of DC Comics, deeper insight into the fight reveals that Superman only lost because of one hilarious reason. At least, one version of the story claims that to be the case, and based on the specifics of Superman’s abilities, it is too probable to simply discredit entirely.
In Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey #1 by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti, Harley Quinn is dreaming about her recent tropical vacation with Poison Ivy where Superman was their personal server. In this fantasy, Superman is bringing the two their drinks in exchange for some life-saving information on his friend, Jimmy. During that process, Harley and Ivy are roasting Superman about his powers, both real and completely fabricated, including one that allegedly led to Superman’s temporary demise.

When Harley Quinn says that Superman can shoot love beams from his eyes, Superman corrects her by explaining his two optic powers are heat and x-ray vision. Then, Superman elaborated about the x-ray vision ability and how it’s been more of a hindrance than a help in the past, saying, “There was this one time I fought Doomsday. He was at an uncomfortable angle and… well, he definitely got the upper hand. And I just… died”. Superman was evidently taken aback by the unwanted sight of Doomsday’s nether regions and because of that, Doomsday won his infamous victory and seemingly killed Superman.
