Charlie Day, who plays Luigi in the upcoming Super Mario Bros. animated movie, says that the script is top secret. The film, which is currently untitled, will be the second American feature-length project to feature the characters from Mario, the video game franchise created by Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo in 1981. The franchise has spanned dozens of video games across multiple platforms over the years, with the characters spinning off to appear in multiple animated television shows — both American and Japanese — but only ever one feature film to date: the 1993 live-action flop Super Mario Bros. which starred John Leguizamo and Bob Hoskins.
Now that multiple decades have cleared the taste of that film from people's mouths, Illumination Entertainment has announced that they are developing a new animated film featuring the characters, expected to come to theaters in late 2022. The film is being directed by the men behind Teen Titans Go!, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, from a script by Matthew Fogel, who previously provided the story for The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part and wrote the upcoming Minions: The Rise of Gru. In addition to their controversial casting of Chris Pratt as Mario, the film will feature Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Jack Black as Bowser, and Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong.
