Konami has announced that Super Bomberman R Online will end later this year.
The free-to-play online multiplayer game was originally released in 2020 as a Stadia exclusive, but then came to PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC on May 27, 2021.
However, Konami has now stated that the game will no longer be playable as of December 1, just 18 months after coming to consoles.
“This service has continued to operate with the support of many users since its launch in May 2021,” Konami’s statement reads, seemingly ignoring the Stadia release.
“But due to various circumstances, we have decided to terminate the service on all platforms on December 1, 2022 at 01:00 (UTC).
“The sale of Bomber Coins and Premium Packs will end at 01:00 UTC on June 1, 2022. We ask that all unused Bomber Coins be used before the end of the service.
“We hope that you will enjoy the game until the end of the service.”
Although the news of the game’s closure may mark the end of free-to-play Bomberman, it appears that the game’s full-price predecessor Super Bomberman R will remain available for purchase.
Konami has also assured players that the Bomberman series will continue despite the closure of the free-to-play game, promising something new will be revealed soon.
“The Bomberman series is moving forward with new projects,” it said. “We hope to be able to inform you of this project soon. Thank you for your continued support of the Bomberman series.”
