Sting was called The Icon long before he arrived on the scene in AEW during the Winter Is Coming show back in 2020, and he's now filing to trademark that moniker. He earned that nickname by being the face of multiple companies across a decades-long Hall of Fame career, and he's been a staple on AEW television since his introduction on that special episode of Dynamite.
Since making his on-screen debut in 1987, Sting has become a staple of the professional wrestling landscape. He's worked more than 670 televised matches for more than a dozen companies and has carried the banner as "the guy" numerous times. He's especially well known for his time in WCW, where he stayed away from joining the NWO for a time and took up The Crow version of Sting that is still seen on AEW to this day.

He's been with the company for several years now, and there may be some new merchandise unveiled if recent trademark filings are any indication. Steven Fernandes of PWInsider.com is reporting that Sting has filed to trademark the phrase "The Icon" for goods and services for "entertainment in the nature of wrestling contests." Specifically, "hats; Shirts; Socks; Sweatshirts; Bandanas; Hooded sweatshirts." The trademark filing also lists energy drinks and energy shots as well.
When Sting first walked the ramp in AEW, audiences weren't expecting him to go on some magnificent singles run where he'd put on 20-minute bangers with the likes of Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega, and MJF. The Icon has still largely over-delivered during his time with the company, however. His presence made Darby Allin feel like a big deal right off the bat and helped turn the daredevil into a bona fide star for AEW.
