Minions: The Rise of Gru star Steve Carellshares the worst audition story of his career. Carell largely became a household in the early 2000s with the release of The Office, in which he played bumbling office manager Michael Scott. Around the same time, he also started appearing in feature films, including Judd Apatow's 2005 hit The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Carell will also be known to many fans for his roles in films like Evan Almighty, Crazy, Stupid, Love, and Anchorman.
Since the conclusion of The Office, Carell has appeared in a number of more serious roles, including Foxcatcher, The Big Short, and Vice. Despite appearances in these movies, the actor retains a strong presence in the comedy genre, including as the voice of Gru in the upcoming Minions: The Rise of Gru. The film acts as a spinoff/prequel to the Despicable Me films, telling the story of Gru's early life and his attempts to join a supervillain group known as the Vicious 6 in the 1970s. Carell is expected to reprise his role as Gru in the upcoming Despicable Me 4, which is expected to release in July of 2024.
