Steam’s most wishlisted game, The Day Before, has been delayed from next month to 2023, as FNTASTIC transitions the game’s development to Unreal Engine 5. The Day Before, a gritty, post-apocalyptic MMO, was originally unveiled back in February 2021, with indie developer FNTASTIC dropping a 4K announcement trailer and gameplay preview. The demo shared a glimpse of what players could expect from The Day Before, a cross between The Divisionand the single-player Naughty Dog hit, The Last of Us. The trailer followed two players’ search for fuel in a city ravaged by flesh-eating zombies before they were ambushed by a band of other players and ultimately hunted by an undead hoard.
The sudden gameplay reveal helped The Day Before quickly gain traction, as fans began anxiously awaiting the zombie MMO. The right mix of intrigue and reveal helped the first gameplay trailer amass millions of views, an impressive feat considering FNTASTIC is an indie developer with only small projects under its belt. Radiant, the studio’s first game, was a small-scale, story-driven game, and its second title, The Wild Eight is another single-player adventure. Neither game suggests the studio has experience developing a large-scale MMO, especially one as in-depth as The Day Before’s gameplay trailer seemed to promise.
