Game developer Crytek has announced that Crysis 4 is in the early stages of development and released a short teaser trailer asking viewers to "Join the journey. Become the hero."
Avni Yerli, CEO of Crytek, confirmed the existence of the game in a blog post, but gave nothing away regarding what we can expect from the gameplay, story, or even when we can expect to play it. For now, all Crytek is willing to share is that a dedicated team is assigned to the project and they need to hire 22 people to work on the game spread across art, design, project management, and programming roles.
The last mainline Crysis game was released back in 2013 in the form of Crysis 3. Since then, we got Crysis Remastered in 2020 and Crysis Remastered Trilogy last year. Crysis games have always been multi-platform releases developed using the CryEngine. This is likely to continue for Crysis 4.
With Microsoft recently announcing its intention to acquire Activision, and in so doing take control of the Call of Duty series, there could certainly be moves by either Sony or Microsoft to try and secure Crysis 4 as an exclusive for the PS5 or Xbox. As a private company, there's also a chance Crytek is now on the radar of both Sony and Microsoft for possible acquisition, such is the climate within the game industry right now.
