Starbucks and Amazon are opening a second coffee-and-shopping location in New York City.
The two companies first collaborated in November, but as GeekWire reports(Opens in a new window), they are now teaming up again for a Starbucks Pickup with Amazon Go store in The New York Times Building at 40th St. and 8th Ave.
Starbucks Reward members who order ahead and pay using the mobile app can quickly collect their hot or cold drink. While in the store, there's the option to swipe their smartphone and pick up lunch or groceries from Amazon's grab-and-go shop, which trades human cashiers for computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning.
Staffed Starbucks registers are present for those who visit Amazon Go for food and then realize they'd really like a coffee. Customers looking to relax over a croissant or hold an informal meeting may also take advantage of a lounge area, which features individual workspaces, tables, USB ports, and all-important power outlets.
The first Starbucks Pickup with Amazon Go store launched last winter on 59th St., between Park and Lexington avenues, combining the coffee chain's order-ahead feature with e-commerce firm's Just Walk Out cashierless technology.
Amazon and Starbucks are planning to open at least three joint locations, the third of which has not yet been revealed. The 59th St. and NYT Building stores, meanwhile, are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET Monday to Friday, and 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET on the weekends. We should also expect to see more Amazon Go stores popping up in surburban areas soon.
