One Star Trek fan theory posits that Captain Kirk was actually killed in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and that subsequent movies were all a simulation. Star Trek has been captivating fans since the '60s, with many of the sci-fi franchise's most dedicated exploring every facet of the final frontier along with Kirk and the Enterprise's crew. However, one fan theory, posted to Reddit, claims that the events of the Star Trek movies were almost entirely a simulation made by the V'Ger probe after it assimilated Kirk.
After Star Trek: The Original Series was canceled, work began to bring the Enterprise's story to the big screen, which culminated in 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The film continues the story of Star Trek's Captain Kirk as he undertakes a mission to investigate a destructive cloud of energy approaching Earth. The cloud, known as V'Ger, is seen to easily destroy three Klingon warships and the Epsilon Ninespace station before the Enterprise's intervention.

The fan theory posits that Kirk is assimilated by V'Ger in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and that all of his subsequent adventures are simulations. All of the explanations for V'Ger's actions come after Kirk and co. have ventured into the cloud, so it's a tricky theory to either prove or disprove. However, there are a number of compelling pieces of evidence that make it more plausible than it might seem.
