Lee Jung-Jae (Squid Game) has joined The Acolyte, an upcoming series set in the Star Wars' High Republic period. The casting announcement was first reported by Deadline--Lee will play the male lead opposite Amandla Stenberg (Bodies, Bodies, Bodies), who was announced as the female lead back in July.
The Acolyte comes from Russian Doll co-creator Leslye Headland. A description reads, «The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.» Headland has also said that her series takes place a century before The Phantom Menace and will be more interested in «the political and personal and spiritual things that came up in a time period that we don't know much about.» What that likely means is we will be seeing the Star Wars galaxy at the High Republic's peak, when the Jedi were at their strongest and the Sith were believed to have been eradicated.
The next recent Star Wars TV series to make its debut was Andor, which will arrive September 21 on Disney+. The spin-off of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, follows the character Cassian Andor from that movie. It already has a Season 2 coming, and Season 1 is all about learning more about Cassian and what drove him to become a person who would sacrifice himself for the greater good without vanity or recognition for it.
Star Wars: Ahsoka began production in May, and is tentatively slated for a late 2022 or 2023 release on Disney+.
