As casting continues for the project, the first Madame Web story details have been revealed confirming the new Sony movie will serve as an origin story for the titular character. The new film will act as the next installment in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, which launched with 2018's Venom and has continued with last year's Venom: Let There Be Carnage, both of which were box office hits, and this year's flop Morbius. Dakota Johnson is leading the cast of Madame Web in the titular role alongside Euphoria's Sydney Sweeney and Ghostbusters: Afterlife's Celeste O'Connor, with the latter two's character details currently under wraps.
Since making her comics debut in 1980, Madame Web has made her way to the screen twice with the '90s animated Spider-Man series as well as the 2010's Ultimate Spider-Man, which utilized the Julia Carpenter incarnation of the character. Following the success of Venom, Sony began ramping up development on its various Spider-Man-related movies, including Madame Web, with Morbius duo Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama penning the script for the film and S.J. Clarkson at the helm. Johnson entered talks to lead Madame Web in February and was confirmed shortly thereafter, with Sony setting a mid-2023 release date this past April.
