A pair of custom-made Apple-branded sneakers from the 1990's is being sold by Sotheby's for $50,000.
The sneakers are classed as "ultra-rare" because they were only offered as a one-time giveaway at a National Sales Conference in the mid-90's. Sotheby's explains that, "Having never reached the general public, this particular pair of sneakers is one of the most obscure in existence and highly coveted on the resale market."
Their official name is the "Omega Sports Apple Computer Sneakers(Opens in a new window)," and they are classed as new even though they are nearly 30-years-old. As you'd expect, the white sneakers have a few imperfections due to their age consisting of yellowing around the midsouls and glue. There are also some light marks on the toe boxes.
As the sneakers are new, the buyer can expect to receive the box and an alternative pair of red laces. The biggest draw, however, is going to be a combination of how obscure this product is combined with that classic Apple rainbow logo.
Last week, someone spent $190,372.80 purchasing a sealed original iPhone, and last year someone spent $200,000 on a worn-out pair of Steve Job's sandals. With that in mind, an Apple collector spending $50,000 on these sneakers won't be surprising. The fact they are size 10.5 means very little as they are no doubt never going to be worn for fear of causing damage.
