When Sonic the Hedgehog hit theatres back in 2020, it surprised everyone by actually being really good. It set a new bar for video game film adaptations, and quickly followed up with Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the highest-grossing video game movie in the US. Now, the third film in the series, currently just known as Sonic 3, has gotten a release date of December 20, 2024.
The announcement was made by the official Sonic Movie Twitter account, with it writing the cast will be "Running faster, flying higher, and punching harder." It also posted a gif with Tails, Sonic, and Knuckles standing atop a rock looking stern and ferocious.

We don't know much about the plot of Sonic 3 yet, but what we do know is that the creators are planning to take inspiration from Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow's self-titled solo spinoff game. The writers have also hinted that we could finally see an appearance from Amy. With the way Sonic's team has been slowly popping up, this would make perfect sense.
“I don't think it's revealing anything to say we'd love to incorporate elements from Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog, his solo spinoff game,” said Josh Miller, a Sonic writer. Shadow was revealed in the credit scene in Sonic 2.
However, while fan favourites will and may be returning to the film series, Jim Carrey's possible return is not confirmed. The actor who plays Robotnik casually announced his retirement from acting earlier this year, shocking many.
He said, "It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”
