Nintendo has announced the arrival of three old-school games cominf to. Members can now try out the Super Famicom games Wrecking Crew ’98 and Amazing Hebereke and the SNES title Super R-Type. Of the three games, only Super R-Type was previously released outside of Japan.
Released internationally in 1984, Wrecking Crew sees Mario and Luigi smashing walls, pillars, and ladders in a chaotic action platformer. The Japan-only sequel, Wrecking Crew ’98, sees Mario return to the mushroom kingdom to find Bouser blocking the sun with multiple high rises. Armed with a magic hammer, players clear panels to unleash attacks on their opponent. The more panels Mario breaks, the more damage he does. The Nintendo Switch Online version includes both Wrecking Crew ’98 and the 1984 original.
Also coming to America for the first time is Sunsoft’s Amazing Hebereke from 1994. The adorable action game sees players battling it out in colorful stages littered with traps and weapons. Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can play solo or in a vs. mode with up to three other players.
The 1991 shooter game Super R-Type stands out by being the only one previously released in the US. Developed by Irem Software Engineering, it sees players defending Earth from the alien BYDO Empire. Players pilot the titular R-9 through seven challenging stages. A notoriously hard game even for the time, the Nintendo Switch Online version features adjustable difficulty settings.
Despite mostly being the same console, the SNES and Super Famicom used different cartridges as a form of region locking. While adapters exist, it still added an extra layer of difficulty for Americans who wanted to play the Japan-only games. However, Nintendo fans finally have an opportunity to try out two of those Japan-exclusive titles.
