Today, Snap offered a new way to use Snapchat by launching a web-based version of its messaging app.
It's called Snapchat for Web(Opens in a new window) and brings the Snapchat interface, as well as messaging, voice, and video calls to the desktop. That means you'll be able to start a conversation on Snapchat via your smartphone, but then continue it when sitting down to use your laptop or desktop PC.
Initially, Snapchat for Web is only being made available to Snapchat+ subscribers in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. However, as TechCrunch reports(Opens in a new window), it will be rolled out to subscribers in France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates soon after launch and then followed by global availability. There's no details yet of if and when users who don't subscribe to Snapchat+ will gain access.
Accessing Snapchat for Web requires visiting web.snapchat.com, and Snap states you need to use Google's Chrome browser to do so. I'd be surprised if it didn't work with other browsers, though, especially those using the same Chromium codebase (e.g. Microsoft Edge, Opera). Gaining access requires entering your Snapchat username and password followed by a two-step verification process using your phone.
Messaging via the web interface already supports chat reactions and chat reply, with support for Lenses on video calls planned. Video and voice calls should also just work without requiring anything else be installed for your web browser. And whoever is in the conversation will know you're using Snapchat for Web as Snap adds a laptop to your Bitmoji.
