Following yet another discussion on what Silent Hill 2 ending is canonical, series art director Masahiro Ito has claimed that every single ending is canon if you want it to be, even the dog one.
Canonicity (which essentially means if a fact, detail, or action is true to an overall story) is something that's argued about in pretty much every gaming community, but it's something that gets a whole lot more complicated if the game in question has more than one ending. Such is the case for every Silent Hill game, which have anywhere between three and six endings that can be achieved by the player.

Although most Silent Hill fans tend to agree on which game's ending is canon to its story (such as In Water generally being considered the canon ending for Silent Hill 2) to this day there is still a lot of discussion around the subject. Well, it seems like Masahiro Ito, the art director for the first three games in the series and the man who designed Pyramid Head (to his own chagrin), isn't interested in those conversations, as he's recently stated that every ending is canon if you want it to be. Yes, even the dog one.
Over on Twitter, Ito tweeted, "When James dived into the pond, did he think 'Even in another life, I'll be happy whenever I am, as long as I'm with you'?", which is a direct reference to the In Water ending from Silent Hill 2. Twitter user its_breadd commented on the tweet saying that Ito discussing it was evidence that In Water was canon to Silent Hill 2.
