Following the departure of star Keanu Reeves in 2022, Hulu has halted development on the series The Devil in the White City, which hails from Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. Reeves quit the show after director Todd Field left, and now the series is undergoing a big shakeup, though the show may not be dead for good.
A source told Variety that there are plans in the works to shop The Devil in the White City to other potential homes, though none were named in the report.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) and Jude Law (The Two Popes) could be circling the project to star, with Matt Ross (American Pyscho) tipped to direct the next version of the show.
Based on the Erik Larson book, The Devil in the White City tells the story of the visionary architect Daniel H. Burnham and the serial killer Dr. H.H. Holmes in 1893 against the backdrop of the Chicago World's Fair that year. Reeves was lined up to play Burnham, but no actor had signed on to play Holmes.
DiCaprio's Appian Way Productions bought the film rights in 2010 and the original plan was to adapt the book for a film featuring DiCaprio starring as Holmes, with Scorsese directing. That never happened, and the movie became a TV series, which is now running into its own set of issues.
Holmes built a home, known as Murder Castle, that had everything needed to kill people and hide the evidence. His killing career peaked during the World's Fair in 1983.
Scorsese and DiCaprio have worked together multiple times before for the films The Departed and The Wolf of Wall Street. They will team up again in this year's Killers of the Flower Moon, with DiCaprio starring and Scorsese directing.
