Russia Fines Twitch $33,000 Over 31-Second Video

Twitch is facing a $33,000 fine due to a 31-second clip Russia claims contains "fake" information regarding its military campaign in Ukraine.

As Reuters reports(Opens in a new window), the content of the video has not been revealed in detail, but it centers on a girl from the town of Bucha. The fine was issued by a Russian court because Twitch failed to remove the video. The Amazon-owned video streaming service has yet to comment publicly on the fine or the video.

We're getting used to seeing the Russian government attempting to control the information shared regarding its war with Ukraine. It can easily control what the Russian population sees, but as these fines demonstrate, it's completely failing to do so elsewhere in the world.

This Twitch fine is tiny in comparison to the $370 million fine Google was issued for spreading "false" information about the Ukraine invasion. However, it's not the first fine Twitch has received from the Russian government this year. Back in May, Russia targeted the service along with Apple, Airbnb, Likeme, Pinterest, UPS, and Google with fines for storing personal data outside of Russian territory. With the current sanctions in place, it's unlikely Russia will ever see any of this money.
