Warning! Spoilers for Robin #16
A newly released variant cover for Robin #16 homages the animated opening of the 1960s' Batman with Adam West and Burt Ward. The iconic theme’s visuals have permeated pop culture just as much as the song itself, and now Damian Wayne stars at the center of it.
While neither Batman, Robin, or their rogues are the same as the iterations from Adam West’s Batman TV series from the ‘60s, the retro take on Gotham City has become a touchstone in the DC Universe. In recent years, fans have been rewarded with a comic book continuation in Batman ’66 and a few animated movies starring West and Ward reunited as the Dynamic Duo.

The upcoming issue of Robin #16 will feature a «Robin ’66» variant cover illustrated by Dan Schoening. In tribute to the series, the cover depicts Batman and his son Damian Wayne teaming up with Ravagar, Talia al Ghul, Conner Hawke, and Flatline against a variety of foes, including sound effect text to represent their punches. The variant shows a collection of thugs, along with the Joker and the Riddler in their retro costumes. Bane, Clayface, and the Penguin appear to make brief cameos at the bottom of the cover. Each character evokes the past era, with Damian’s assassin suit now appearing like it might in the theme’s animation style. Similarly, Batman’s costume appears identical to the ‘60s series. In place of the instantly recognizable logo, Robin’s name appears as the title with his face instead of Batman. Even the DC Comics logo has been replaced with a callback to when the publisher was also largely regarded as National Comics, despite their emphasis on “DC.”
