Marvel Comics supervillain Red Skullhas long been established as Captain America’s arch enemy, though fans recently learned that he is immune to an attack far more powerful than anything Captain America could deliver. The Penance Stare is Ghost Rider’s greatest attack as it burns the souls of those deemed guilty of sin, but there are a few stipulations to the terrifying ability. Even with all of the evil Red Skull has put out into the world, Marvel Comics established that he is immune to Ghost Rider’s Penance Stare for one specific reason that makes him even more villainous.
In Avengers: Forever#2 by Jason Aaron, Aaron Kuder, and Carlos Magno, Robbie Reyes’ Ghost Rider is being held captive by an alternate version of Red Skull known as Black Skull. Black Skull is a version of Red Skull who has bonded with the Venom symbiote, making him a much greater and more malevolent threat. Black Skull is torturing Ghost Rider to find out who he is and why he has come to this universe. During that torture, fans learn that Black Skull is immune to Ghost Rider’s Penance Stare for reasons that make Earth-616 Red Skull immune to that power as well.

While torturing Ghost Rider, Black Skull cuts off the Rider’s foot and hands it to one of his minions for disposal. When the minion takes it, he immediately bursts into flames as the hellfire present on the dismembered foot scorches his sinful soul. Black Skull laughs, saying that what happened to his minion could never happen to him as his soul is too scarred and describes it as being, “Forged in the fires of holy war and righteous genocide!”.
