The Punisher began his life as a murderous vigilante after his family was killed in a gang-related shooting. While their deaths left a gaping hole in his heart, the Punisher was quickly able to fill it with carnage and vengeful justice – a dark despite inside of him that led to the biggest twist of his Marvel Comics career which revealed why he later killed his own family when they were returned to him.
In Punisher #2 by Jason Aaron, Jesús Saiz, and Paul Azaceta, Frank Castle has joined the villainous group of ninjas known as the Hand and brutally kills their enemies in the name of the demon-god they worship. The reason the Punisher made the change is that the Hand promised to resurrect his family if he fought for them. This issue shows that they have already brought back his wife, though his children have yet to be resurrected. Frank’s continued service for the Hand will ensure that his children are returned to him just as his wife had been, finally granting him the life that he always claimed to have wanted.

While the events of the current Punisher run may seem like Frank Castle’s dream come true, an earlier story proves that isn’t the case. In Punisher #10 by Rick Remender and Tan Eng Huat, the Punisher faces off against a magical villain named the Hood who successfully resurrected the Punisher’s family. However, instead of giving up his life as the Punisher and living the remainder of his days with the loved ones he’d lost, the Punisher decides to burn them alive in their coffins.
