On Saturday, April 2, select GameStop stores across the United States will have limited quantities of PS5 console bundles available to purchase in-store. The PS5 has remained in short supply around the globe since hitting the market well over a year ago in November 2020. Of course, pandemic-induced part shortages share the bulk of the blame, with various industries continuing to suffer under the weight of semiconductor supply constraints. Even recent news from the likes of Ford and General Motors suggests the chip shortage will not come to a halt anytime soon.
Though the PlayStation 5 is no longer keeping pace with PS4 sales during the same time frame in its life cycle, the newer Sony console still boasts impressive sales numbers. As of December 31, 2021, the fifth PlayStation-branded home console had topped 17.3 million units sold worldwide. Comparatively, the PS4 reached a staggering sales total of 18.5 million by early January 2015. This does not spell doom for the current-gen hardware, of course, but Sony is no doubt frustrated by its inability to fulfill supply demands. Fortunately, some prospective PS5 owners will have a chance to purchase the console this coming weekend.
