The latest Pokémon game attempts to reinvent the franchise with an open world adventure inspired by Zelda and Monster Hunter.
Nintendo is always very keen to remind the world that Pokémon is one of the biggest media franchises in history, as big as Grand Theft Auto and Call Of Duty in terms of physical game sales but added to that is everything from Pokémon Go to the trading card game and an infinity of plushie sales. Pokémon has been printing money for over 25 years now, and yet to look at the last few games you’d assume it was some sort of low budget indie production by inexperienced developers.
Pokémon Sword/Shield and remake Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl drew justified criticism for their technical incompetence and, in the case of the former, its faltering attempts at innovation. Initially it seemed as if Sword/Shield would be the epic open world adventure Pokémon fans have always imagined, but the reality of its dumbed down gameplay and small, uninteractive open world areas was hugely disappointing.
We should point out that both games were massive hits anyway but Pokémon Legends: Arceus is being promoted as something different. A game with the scope of a mainline entry but which attempts to do things differently, with influences from modern open world titles like Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and Monster Hunter. We should warn you straight away that Pokémon Legends is nowhere near as good as that description makes it sound, but it does get surprisingly close at times.
