Despite only launching today, January 28, Pokémon Legends: Arceus hasalready broken a retail store record while topping online storefronts globally. The release of a new mainline Pokémon video game is always a big deal and the best-selling Nintendo Switch game list has several entries in the series, but the launch of Pokémon Legends: Arceus is perhaps performing above expectations.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the first mainline entry in the series to go in a new direction with its storyline. The goal of this game is to explore the wild frontier of the Pokémon world and catch Pokémon in an era where they ruled the land, as humans had yet to colonize the region. Instead of playing as a kid going on their Pokémon journey in the modern-day, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is set in the Hisui region, which is an ancient version of the Sinnoh region from Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

UK retailer Currys has revealed on Twitter (via Video Games Chronicle) that Pokémon Legends: Arceus is its most pre-ordered game in history, topping other Switch big sellers like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart. It was also revealed by So_Ethereal on Twitter that Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the number one top-selling game on Amazon USA, Japan, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Canada, and Australia, proving the success of the release around the world.
