The latest financial results from Nintendo show that the Switch has now outsold both the Wii and PS1, as Mario Kart 8 hits 50 million.
Nintendo has always been a company of extremes. Their consoles tend to either be massive hits or dismal failures and in early 2017 the Wii U was very much the latter, with few expecting its successor, the Nintendo Switch, to fare much better. But it did.
Buoyed by an excellent first year line-up of software, the Switch was an instant hit and yet with a more than three-year head start it seemed impossible it could catch up with rivals the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
Despite having a three and a half year head-start the Xbox One (thought to be on around 50 million sales) was passed over a year ago and Nintendo’s hybrid console now has a global total of 103.54 million.
That total is more than the 101.63 of the Wii and the 102.49 million of the original PlayStation, making the Switch the fifth best-selling console of all time.
The fourth best-seller is the PlayStation 4 on 116.4 million, with the Game Boy the third on 118.69 million. Although the PlayStation 4 is still selling (and Sony recently restarted production) there’s now a very good chance the Switch could beat both.
The second and first place consoles are probably out of reach though, with the Nintendo DS having sold 154.02 million and the PlayStation 2 over 155 million.
Although this is obviously good news for Nintendo, they’ve still had lower their forecasts for the next financial year because of chip shortages caused by the pandemic, which is exactly what Sony had to do earlier this week. Nintendo’s profit forecast has increased anyway though, based purely on software.
Speaking of software, Nintendo has updated totals for all its most
