Shiny rates in Pokémon GO are vastly different from the rates in the mainline Pokémon series games. Shiny Pokémon are Pokémon with different colors than usual. When they’re found, a special sparkling animation and sound effect plays, giving them the fan name of “shiny” before the term was officially coined.
Although Shiny Pokémon were first introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver, instances of alternately colored Pokémon have appeared in official media prior to those games, including the iconic pink Butterfree from the earliest episodes of the anime. Official Shiny Pokémon have since appeared across many different Pokémon media, such as Ash’s shiny Noctowl in the Johto anime, the Shiny Celebi in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky, and even various Shiny Pokémon sync pairs in Pokémon Masters EX.

For all their appearances outside of the mainline series, Shiny Pokémon have remained fairly elusive and highly sought after in the mainline series. With their shared connectivity through Home, Pokémon GO also includes Shiny Pokémon, although the rate at which Shiny Pokémon appear in GO differs vastly from that of the mainline series. The mainline series features numerous aspects that the player can control to improve their odds of finding a Shiny Pokémon; Shiny rates in Pokémon GO, on the other hand, can’t be affected by the player in any way. Instead, the rates fluctuate, with special events such as Pokémon GO’s Community Days having increased spawn rates for Shiny Pokémon appearances.
