Niantic has announced Pokemon Go Fest 2022, surprising nobody. The annual summer event is returning, in summer. We all knew it was coming. However, exactly what it entails is news. There’s Customised Special Research and a new Unown debuting, both of which are exciting, the former especially. However, I want to talk about the new shinies.
Shiny Pokemon are exciting. They’re easier to get your hands on in Go than other games, although the odds vary and some people enjoy the most challenging hunts rather than grinding the 1/50 Pokemon Go event chance to rack up as many as possible. Whether I grind a Community Day or other Pokemon Go event often depends on the quality of the shiny involved, and like every Pokemon fan I have my own personal tier list of shinies. Gigalith is top, followed by Mega Gengar and Obstagoon. Luxray and Rayquaza are up there too.

Looking at the Go Fest 2022 lineup, you might be initially disappointed by the shinies available. Shroomish is mid, Numel and Axew barely change colouration at all. Another Unown? Great. Shelmet and Karrablast, sure, they’re okay, but the Pokemon themselves are just little bug dudes, hardly the most exciting monsters around. Sorry to all the Shelmet and Karrablast stans out there. All three of you.
But, dear reader, just you wait until these Pokemon evolve. Breloom turns a lovely shade of red, turning from a friendly forest mushroom to a poisonous fungi. Its new hue gives it an angry presence, like it’s storing up its energy and is ready to properly knock your block off with a Dynamic Punch. Unless you’re a Flying-type that is.
