Recent revelations about Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom focusing on the relationship between Arthur and Orm is exactly what Aquaman 2 needs. Released in 2018, Aquaman was a massive success at the box office, pulling in over $1 billion globally and making the character a household name. The first film starred Jason Momoa as the titular character, a half-human/half Atlantean superhero named Arthur Curry who must contend with his destiny as the rightful king of Atlantis while confronting his half-brother Orm, played by Patrick Wilson, who is hellbent on destroying the surface world. Arthur was initially pulled into the struggle by Mera, played by Amber Heard, who served as the co-lead opposite Momoa in the 2018 film.
The box-office success of Aquaman led to a sequel being greenlit, which would reunite the principal cast, including Momoa, Wilson, Heard, as well as Dolph Lundgren, Nicole Kidman, Temuera Morrison, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, along with director James Wan. The sequel has already teased a team-up with Momoa's Aquaman and Wilson's Orm, as well as Game of Thrones' Pilou Asbæk taking on a mysterious villain role, with the film said to be «more mature» than the first film but «still fun» and with touches of horror inspiration throughout. However, Aquaman 2 is changing up one big aspect, which will ultimately work out in its favor, as there's a reshuffling of the deck in terms of who will feature more prominently alongside Arthur in the sequel.
