Released in the United States in 1998, Pokemon Red and Blue had a first Gym battle that one might describe as gray. Pewter City was the home of Brock who specialized in Rock-type Pokemon. While Brock's animated counterpart had a much larger role in the animated series, he was a fierce foe that players had to overcome in the original games.
In the original Pokemon games, Brock only had two Pokemon for the player to battle. They were Geodude and Onyx which made the battle difficult for anyone who chose Charmander as their starter or played Pokemon Yellow. Wild Pokemon with counters to Brock's Rock-types were hard to come by at that point in the game. In the animated series, Brock would ultimately leave Pewter City and join Ash on his journey, though the character did leave and return to Ash's side several times in thePokemonseries.
