Some consider Pig Royalty to be the reality sleeper hit of the past few years. The show, which was first released on the streaming platform Discovery+ in 2021, focuses on the pig showing community in rural Texas. It follows two families, the Baleros and the Rihns as they compete in pig shows across the state. Critics have compared Pig Royalty to shows like Tiger King and Real Housewives, with a cast that tends to feel more relatable.
The competitive nature between the Rihn family and the Balero family initially seems to fall more on the daughters of each family than the matriarchs, Jody Rihn and Michelle Balero. In the premiere episode, Kammi Rihn is quoted saying "We are Walgreens, they are Sephora" in reference to the three Balero sisters. But it became more and more apparent throughout the two seasons that the rivalry was more than just competitive spirits. The Rihns and the Baleros battled it out at shows and in confessionals, often criticizing the other family's performance in a competition or on how they ran their own pig shows. It left fans wondering if there was more to the story than what was let on. Why was there such an intense rivalry between the two families?

Jody said that "once [production] got over here they realized 'Oh wow, these
