The boss of PlatinumGames wants it to go all in on live services but won’t abandon ‘one-off’ games like Bayonetta.
PlatinumGames has already teased the possibility of creating its own live service games, but it sounds like it is eager to make them a big part of its future.
Speaking with Famitsu (as translated by VGC), CEO and president Atsushi Inaba, who took over only last month, talked about his desire to see PlatinumGames make more titles that ‘can be enjoyed and loved for a longer period of time.’
He was quick to assure fans that this won’t mean the studio will stop making ‘one-off’ games like the upcoming Bayonetta 3, or smaller games like Sol Cresta, but he feels a change in direction is necessary.
‘The projects that we are trying to create for the future will be different in terms of their structure. Considering the changes in the market over the next five years or so, I think it is absolutely necessary for us to do this. I’m sorry for being so vague, but I think that’s all I can tell you right now,’ he said.
While discussing games that will be different to those that PlatinumGames has made before, he offhandedly mentions Project G.G., the next game from Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya.
‘Oops, I almost blurted out something important about where we are going,’ he admitted. ‘Project G.G. is still in the stage of testing various things, so I can’t tell you much about it, but when it comes to future game production, we want to focus on creating games that are different from the past.’
Project G.G. is meant to serve as the third game in Kamiya’s trilogy of superhero inspired games, following Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101, both of which are dedicated single-player experiences with passionate fanbases.
