Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 4 thankfully avoided the worst possible connection to Disney+’s Book of Boba Fett series. Though it wouldn’t be fair to call it a failure, Boba Feet’sStar Wars show was not considered the huge hit that Lucasfilm likely hoped it would be. Instead, the series was held back by a number of problems, including how it made its main character take a backseat in two of its seven episodes.
The two live-action Star Wars shows that preceded Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Disney+ release have had varying degrees of success. The Mandalorian was met with high praise across the board for its contributions to the Star Wars mythos, the story, its unique characters, and more. The situation with Book of Boba Fett, on the other hand, was decidedly different. Though it too certainly had its fair share of memorable moments, it wasn’t unable to match the hype of either season of The Mandalorian. As a result, there’s been a sense that in order to be a hit for Disney, Obi-Wan Kenobi needs to avoid The Book of Boba Fett’s mistakes.

Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 4 started to register unwelcome comparisons by showing Obi-Wan flailing around in the bacta tank. This set up the show offering its own take on The Book of Boba Fett’s flashback formula, which saw the first five episodes kick off with flashbacks to his life after Return of the Jedi before pivoting to the present. Considering how this quickly became a tiring storytelling technique for the series, it’s for the best thatObi-Wan Kenobi ultimately didn’t move in the same direction.
