Murphy has portrayed the Birmingham crime boss in the BBC's historical crime drama since 2013. Peaky Blinders season 6 aired in 2022, with the full season being released on Netflix later in June.
Stepping out of the horrors of the First World War, Murphy's Tommy Shelby returned home to Birmingham, quickly taking advantage of numerous opportunities to build up a criminal empire in the city. As his empire grew, so did the kinds of schemes he would commit, losing loved ones and spilling blood in pursuit of his ambitions until he reached his limit, considering taking his life in the Peaky Blinders season 5 climax of season five before a possible illness could take him. Despite the penultimate season leaving Tommy with few alternatives, Murphy's character narrowly escaped his fate, getting revenge on those who sought to tear him down and leaving him with the opportunity to start again as a better man.

With the season 6 finale leaving Tommy in a better place, Murphy opens up about his journey to rebuild himself. In an interview with Deadline, Murphy was asked about how Tommy's ultimate fate at the series' end mirrored his introduction, and whether he felt the character was redeemed by the end of his journey.
