In 2021, Bandai Namco launched their latest attempt at transforming their iconic yellow pellet eater into a multiplayer experience, Pac-Man 99, a last man standing competition that drew inspiration from fellow Nintendo Switch Online freebies Tetris 99 and the short-lived Super Mario Bros. 35.
Two years later, the Japanese publisher has announced that Pac-Man 99 will be shutting down its online services later this year and will no longer be offered via the Switch eShop or as a free download for Switch Online subscribers. Starting on August 8, paid custom themes will no longer be available for purchase, followed by the removal of the Deluxe Pack and Mode Unlock DLC from the eShop on September 8. Then, on October 8, the online servers will be shut down and the main game and free custom themes will no longer be distributed. After that point, only players who have purchased either of the aforementioned DLC packs will be able to play the game’s offline offerings, including CPU Battle mode, Blind Time Attack and Score Attack.
