Symmetra has long been a controversial addition to Overwatch from when she first appeared in the game at launch. Starting out as a Support character, her primary utility came in building a powerful defense by placing six of her turrets which dealt damage while significantly slowing enemy movement. Her ultimate also allowed her to place a teleport anywhere on the map linking back to the spawn room, allowing for a swift return to the fight. She quickly became less effective as players learned more about how to counter her, however, and her first rework came just six months after Overwatch was released.

Over the course of a year, Symmetra saw many reworks that eventually moved her from a Support to a Damage hero, and while she thrived during the double shield meta of 2019, she has been somewhat left behind since the universal shield nerf. Though Symmetra is now a much more balanced character in the right hands, she is made redundant like many heroes by new additions with much more versatile offensive kits. Blizzard is now discussing how things can change in Overwatch 2.
