The big day is almost upon us. Overwatch 2 launches this week, on Tuesday to be exact. A day that will signal the end of the line for the first game as the sequel is ushered in. A number of details regarding how different Overwatch 2 will be compared to the original have already been revealed, including the need to unlock Role Queue.
A screenshot shared on Twitter shows Overwatch 2's menu, revealing that only one game mode will be available when you fire the game up for the first time. That one mode will be Open Queue, an unranked mode that allows players to pick whatever role they like. Three other modes, including Role Queue, will all be locked. You will need to play a certain number of Open Queue matches before it unlocks.

While it will only be five Open Queue matches until Role Queue is unlocked, that it isn't available right away may well prove to be pretty unpopular. Locking ranked and competitive matches to begin with might make sense, but Role Queue doesn't fall into those categories. It's simply a mode that makes sure there are even numbers of the various roles available to theoretically make for a more balanced and rounded match.
If enough people take issue with Role Queue being locked at first, then it might be something Blizzard scraps. Then again, by the time that happens, those who are peeved about having to play five Open Queue matches to get things going will have already done so. It is one of many issues players have raised prior to Overwatch 2's launch, though.
